MUSICAL FLUENCY
DJ ARTISTRY
If you want to DJ but feel overwhelmed, underprepared, or unsupported, this course offers tangible, practical guidance in navigating the complexities of tango DJing.
You will:
-
Access a curated library of tango music, and build a solid foundation in tango orchestras, eras, and families.
-
Transform general DJ concepts into concrete, usable skills.
-
Learn to build tandas and shape an entire milonga into a coherent musical and emotional arc.
-
Develop the sensitivity to read the floor and respond to the energy of the room.
-
Grow through thoughtful homework, shared reflection, and direct feedback that strengthens your confidence.

Inspiring DJs craft a journey, not a playlist. And we’ll give you the tools you need to feel confident at the helm.

Deepen your understanding and appreciation of tango music, and dance with greater musicality, joy, and confidence. This course moves beyond history and terminology into guided listening, focused discussions, and practical tools to sharpen your musical awareness.
You will:
-
Work with a curated library of tango music and learn to hear nuanced differences between songs, orchestras, and eras.
-
Improve your milonga experience by understanding how DJs shape the event.
-
Understand why certain music invites grounded walking, while other music calls for playfulness, drama, or suspension.
-
Develop your ear through guided listening, practice, and engaging discussions.
As your musical understanding grows, dancing becomes a choice rather than a guess. So, if tango music sometimes feels like a foreign language, we invite you to join the conversation!

ABOUT US

ABOUT US
J ABLING
J Abling is a Traditional Tango DJ and educator with over two decades of experience. Since 2008, he has DJed at major festivals and cities across North America, known for musical clarity, strong floor awareness, and thoughtfully crafted tandas. His breakout at the San Diego Tango Festival in 2011 led to regular invitations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
As a classically trained pianist, vocalist and conductor, music education is central to his work. Through musicality trainings, lectures, and listening sessions, J mentors dancers and aspiring DJs in musical phrasing, tanda structure, and deeper musical understanding—supporting more connected and expressive dancing.

RACHEL MOON
A lifelong social dancer, Rachel is a dancer-centered DJ who brings a deep understanding of tango dance, music and culture. Her DJing reflects years of refining her craft at local milongas in the D.C. area, several months living and training in Buenos Aires, and extensive study of tango history, orchestras, and music. She deepened her knowledge of these topics when she and her partner, J. Abling, co-created and taught an online program focused on tango musicality.
Rachel has DJed at events across North America, including Bailongo (Montreal), Albuquerque Tango Festival, Tree City Tango Marathon, and CincOh (Chicago). Wherever she DJs, Rachel aims to inspire dreamy smiles, pounding hearts, playfulness, and at least a few moments of joyful delirium.
